Owners: Ken Gulaian and Kari Heerdt

Ken Gulaian and Kari Heerdt

Hi everyone! We are Kari Heerdt and Ken Gulaian, and as the owners of Round Peak Vineyards, we'd like to introduce ourselves and our team. We met in Cincinnati in 1998 when we both worked for General Electric. We moved to Charlotte, NC in 2000 for a new job opportunity, loved it, and decided North Carolina was where we would stay.

Careers got in the way though, and in 2006 we moved to San Francisco for Kari's work. This proved to be instrumental since it resulted in a lot of time spent enjoying wine in Napa, Sonoma, and especially the Dry Creek Valley. We particularly enjoyed the small family owned wineries.

When we got the chance to return to North Carolina in 2008, again for Kari's work, we jumped at the chance. Ken had already decided it was time to give up the corporate world, and when we found out there was an opportunity to own a winery in North Carolina, we couldn't resist! After visiting, being impressed with the wines, and seeing the spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we decided to take the challenge.

We are committed to making the best possible wines, and we hope you'll come and experience Round Peak Vineyards, visit some of the numerous North Carolina Wineries, and check out all that the area has to offer!

Founders: George & Susan Little and Janet & Lee Martin

Round Peak Vineyards was started by George and Susan Little and Janet and Lee Martin following their trip to the Napa Valley in 1998. Their dream of owning their own vineyard became a reality when they purchased the 32-acre vineyard site on Round Peak Church Road in 1999 and planted six varieties of grapes on eight acres in 2000. George Little and Lee Martin met as students at Davidson College, graduated in 1964, pursued careers in law and banking and married Susan and Janet, both educators. The two couples became friends when the Martins moved to Winston-Salem in 1983, and they soon discovered a common passion for fine wine.

Our Team

Round Peak has a great team that makes it all happen day to day. All of our key leaders have been through the Enology & Viticulture Program at SCC, learning both how to manage the vineyard and how to make wine. While each has a primary responsibility, everyone helps with all aspects of the vineyard, winery, and tasting room business. You'll also find that everyone also has a detailed knowledge of beer and brewing, and all are involved in our Skull Camp Brewery Operation. Meet the team:

Vineyard Manager: Kent Yocco

Kent, a native of Georgia, joined Round Peak as Vineyard Manager in the spring of 2012. After receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Finance from Kennesaw State University, Kent traveled to New Zealand, where he was first introduced to the vineyard. He worked on a vineyard in New Zealand for a year learning pruning, harvesting, and bottling. When Kent returned to the States he decided to pursue a degree in Viticulture & Enology. While learning about wine making, an interest in home-brewing also began which, in-turn, led him to seek an education in craft brewing. Kent currently has a degree in Viticulture & Enology from SCC and a diploma from the American Brewers Guild. Kent has worked at Foothills Brewery and several Yadkin Valley vineyards. Joining the Round Peak team, he is able to incorporate his passions for vines, wines & beers. He plans to continue to travel around the world in his free time to experience and learn from others in the industry.

Vineyard Operations Manager: Lisa St.Clair

In 2006, Lisa and her husband wanted to escape the Florida heat. They decided to give North Carolina a try, and quickly fell in love with all it has to offer. With a passion for being outside and a love for good wine, the viticulture field is a natural fit for Lisa. She recently graduated with honors from the SCC program, where she was the recipient of the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine scholarship in 2012. She enjoys working in the winery and brewery, as well as talking with customers in the tasting room, but is happiest outside playing in the vines. When not at work, Lisa enjoys watching both her garden and her boys grow and flourish in the North Carolina sun.

Tasting Room Manager: Danielle Blaho

Danielle came to Round Peak Vineyards in spring 2011. Following a trip to New Zealand, a passion for wine began. After working in the vineyards of New Zealand for several months, she decided to pursue a career in Viticulture and Enology. From tending to the vines, assisting in the winery and pouring wine in the tasting room, Danielle enjoys learning and being active in every process of producing quality wines. Danielle is currently finishing her degree in the Viticulture & Enology program at SCC and would love to travel to many wine producing areas around the world to continue learning and to further her career and passion in the wine industry.

Winery Operations Manager: Ed Bongel

Edward dreamed of making wine professionally long before it ever became a reality. Growing up in Green Bay, Wisconsin Edward made his first batches of wine at home from what he could find locally — namely cherries, strawberries and other fruit. After careful deliberation, Edward (and wife, Christie) made the decision to move to North Carolina so that Edward could pursue his passion by obtaining a degree in viticulture and enology from Surry Community College. After graduation from school, Edward joined the Round Peak team as Winery Operations Manager. Playing mad scientist in the lab is where Edward is truly happy, but you’re just as likely to find him in the vines, manning the tasting room or fixing something.

Employees:

Zana, Lauren, Christie, and Marcelo

Brewmasters: Kent Yocco and Jeff Leftwich

As of May 2012 we are now brewing our own beer under our Skull Camp Brewing brand! Kent and Jeff share the brewing responsibilities to create unique craft brews for sampling at the winery and in local outlets. As with our Skull Camp wines, expect a series of quaffable beers with fun names that aren't necessarily any particular style. We expect to rotate our selections on a constant basis...you never know what you'll get to sample when you visit!

Can we ship to your state?

Wow, this is a complex area. Some states don't require a permit, some do, some make it a felony to ship to! Some require excise tax, some don't. We've sifted through the regulations, compared it to where most of our customer come from, and here is where we currently are:

  • We can ship to today directly from our website order form:  NC, MN, FL, AK, IA, NM, DC.  Click for Form
  • We can ship to today via our partner VINOSHIPPER:  ID, LA, MO, NE, NV, NH, ND, OH, OR, VA, WV, WY.  Click to order on Vinoshipper
  • We are still thinking about getting permits for: GA, TN, IL, IN, and NY.
  • We don't because of the cost of the permit: SC
  • We can't because it is prohibited: AL, AR, DE, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MS, MT, NJ, OK, PA, SD, UT (send lots of letters to your government officials!).

If your state is not on our list, send us an e-mail. If there is enough interest (and your state allows it), we'll do what we can to ship to you.
